Dear Lauren Owner,
As the communication field changes, on what sometimes appears to be a daily basis, the Lauren's Board of Directors has taken
advantage of an opportunity to update and enlarge systems building wide. They have entered into an agreement with Starpower to allow
the building to be wired for their services at no cost to the association. Construction plans involving the common areas have already been
developed and approved.
As many of you may be aware Starpower is a joint venture between RCN Corporation, an existing fill service telecommunications
company, and PEPCO Communications, L.L.C. a wholly owned, but separate affiliate of Potomac Electric Power Company
(PEPCO). This venture is building an advanced fiber optic network to deliver a full complement of telecommunication services which
includes local and long distance telephone, cable television, and Internet services.
Prior to the Lauren being wired, of which the main component will be the replacement of the existing corridor molding that currently
carries only District Cablevision lines, there is a need to determine what units can be prewired for possible later Starpower activation.
The association does not have the authority to authorize bulk installation that would involve work within a unit.
This is solely the
prerogative of the owner of the unit (While tenants are also receiving a copy of this letter it is intended that they contact their
landlord to inform him/her of this offer and the need to personally respond).
The scope of work would be as follows:
1). A hole would be drilled from the hallway into an apartment.
2). Where possible this would be done into a closet (if one backs up to the hallway). If there is no adjacent closet finger
molding for wiring will be run from the entry point to the nearest closet.
3). A NID (control box measuring apx. 5" x 8" x 3") will be installed about chest high in the closet.
We have been advised by Starpower that if approximately 80% of the owners authorize prewiring then it can be performed at the same
time that the common areas are worked on. From a strictly practical viewpoint this will be the most efficient and least obtrusive manner
this can be performed. The alternate is to have the work done each time an individual owner actually signs up for service. PLEASE
NOTE THAT HAVING YOUR UNIT PREWIRED DOES NOT IMPLY ANY COMMITMENT TO ACTUALLY SIGNING UP
FOR ANY STARPOWER SERVICES. This signup will be conducted by Starpower's marketing department after the Lauren common
areas/hallways are totally wired and ready to begin operation.
Please note that The Lauren is not endorsing Starpower, or in any way acting as their agent. We are merely acting as intermediaries to
facilitate awareness of options to all owners, while at the same time minimizing inconvenience to ell parties. Should you have any specific
questions please feel free to call me and if I cannot answer them you will be put in contact with a Starpower representative.
Please complete and return the attached form no later than June 22, 2000. A stamped self addressed envelope is included for your
convenience and use. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation
I am
