April 8, 2003 The Christian Heurich Mansion next to the Lauren has been sold. The building has long been the home of the The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. Jan Evans and Gary Heurich, grandchildren of Christian Heurich, bought the property. They plan to set up the Heurich House Foundation. Built by a German immigrant brewer, the 5-story, 31-room mansion was completed in 1895. It exemplifies turn-of-the-century bourgeois opulence and German influences like the heavy carved wood ceiling in the dining room. The music room and conservatory, with an indoor fountain, are fine examples of turn of the century affluent decor. The Victoria Garden in back is a lovely and quiet addition to our neighborhood. |
