Condominium Elevators*
Here are some reminders about elevators.
- Over 100 things happen to the elevator and its mechanisms when you call for it. Hence, over 100 things can go wrong with an elevator.
- An elevator breaks down on the average of ten times a year. All elevators shut down. A good service contract will help reduce the number of shutdowns.
- Elevator systems last from 20-40 years in an apartment/ condominium building.
- If elevator breaks down between floors, don't climb out. You could fall back under the cab into the shaft. Stay put.
- DC condos must have a private certified elevator inspector inspect their elevators twice a year in order to get their annual elevator permit from DC.
- Before calling for emergency elevator service, check each item below:
1) Emergency Stop Switch - This switch, located in the car operating panel, must be in the "ON" position.
2) Main-Line Switch - This switch, located in the machine room, must be in the "ON" position.
3) Car-Panel Key Switches. All switches must be in normal operating position.
4) Car & Hatch Door Sills. The sills are to be free of any obstructions, such as coins, sand, trash, etc.
5) Doors Closed - All hatch doors must be closed tightly before the elevator will return.
