Film Screening at American University - Tenleytown

Film Event: Journey to Italy (Roberto Rossellini, 1954, 97 minutes) 7:00pm - 8:40pm

The National Gallery of Art hosts a free screening in collaboration with American University School of Communication and the Embassy of Ital at the Malsi Doyle and Michael Forman Theater, American University.

Traveling through southern Italy, Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders play a mismatched English couple, at odds not only with each other, but also with the setting. Though their marriage is failing, family obligations require that they spend time in the region. Ultimately the landscape, the local paesani, their isolation, and the aura of their surroundings (Naples, Pompeii, and other timeless sites) bring them to a near transcendent moment in their lives. Rossellini's modernist masterpiece becomes, in the end, a profoundly moving rumination on the fragility of life itself.
