Theater 101:
What is the best venue for live theater in the D.C. Metro area?

The best venue for live theater in this area is the Church Street Theater located at 1742 Church Street NW in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. A mid-19th century red brick structure that was originally the gymnasium of the Holton Arms School, the Church Street Theater is a spacious but intimate venue that seats more than 115 people.

In some very welcome news for local theatergoers, Keegan Theatre (which I had listed in my recent article on the area’s best theater companies) announced that, starting next season, they will [be] the Church Street Theater’s sole, full-time resident theatrical company. Accordingly, Keegan’s 2009-2010 Season will be their most ambitious to date with a total of 11 productions.

The season will open with John Steinbeck’s classic Of Mice and Men. Other plays include Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, Terry Johnson’s stage adaptation of The Graduate (based on the novel by Charles Webb and the screenplay by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry), Michael Frayn’s popular farce Noises Off and the world premiere of Girl from Gdansk by Liam Heylin. There will also be two musicals, Jonathan Larson’s Rent and A Man of No Importance based on the 1994 film with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and book by Terrence McNally.

Keegan’s New Island Project, which was previously housed at Arlington’s Theatre on the Run, will also take up residence at Church Street performing on Sunday through Wednesday nights in rotating repertory with the regular Keegan productions (which will perform Thursday through Saturday nights and Sunday matinees). The New Island productions include the regional premiere of Ronan Noone’s The Atheist, the American premiere of Kevin Barry’s There Are Little Kingdoms and the world premieres of Fair Emma (written by Keegan’s own Eric Lucas) and Stella Morgan.

Keegan’s production of Dale Wasserman’s stage adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which opened last weekend, continues through August 15th.
