CASTLE COMMUNIQUE

IN THIS COMMUNIQUE:
* The Castle on CNN.com
* We have to get 680 donations of $250 by 3/15
* Help Jack Evans get $500,000 for The Castle
* New and expanded tour schedule

(And please bear with us as we finish entering several hundred names and addresses of donors so that we can send out "thank you" letters...there's only one person working on this data entry, so it's taking a little more time than we thought...but they're comin'!)

The Castle made the front page of CNN.com under travel! With great thanks to Derrill Holly of Associated Press, here is a link to a story that has reached publications throughout the country:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TRAVEL/DESTINATIONS/02/27/brewmaster.castle.ap/index.html

The response to the crisis continues to be extraordinary...as stated in the article, we now need to raise $170,000 by 15 March, the bank's extended deadline...which, BTW, is now only 680 people making $250 tax-deductible donations, down from 1,000...pretty cool, and doable with your help!

"THE BREWMASTER'S CASTLE NOW NEEDS 680 PEOPLE TO MAKE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS OF $250 BY MARCH 15!"
www.BrewmastersCastle.com

AND, we need your help to get hundreds of emails and letters to the Mayor and Council members urging support and passage of Jack Evans' request for $500,000 for The Castle in the FY'07 budget...(The contact information is below.)

This is critical in that it represents 30% of the Foundation's next goal of reducing the debt and its expense so The Castle will be self-sustaining and so that a repeat of this kind of crisis can be avoided...these emails and letters need to be RECEIVED NO LATER THAN 10 MARCH! (The contact information is below.)

PLEASE forward this email to as many folks as possible...

THANK YOU! Friends of The Castle

HELP SECURE $500,000 FROM THE CITY TO SAVE THE BREWMASTER'S CASTLE
(The contact information is below.)

Write the Mayor, the City Council Chair, and all Council members to ask them to support Councilmember Evans' request for a $500,000 line item for The Brewmaster's Castle in the Mayor's FY'07 budget...this will be his last budget as Mayor, and thus this is an excellent opportunity for him to add to the legacy of his extraordinary contributions to the city.

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission for The Castle's area (2B) has already unanimously voted a resolution of support for Councilmember Evans' request.

FYI...The Castle hosted the Mayor's Annual Preservation Awards in October 2004, which the Mayor attended, and at which the Heurich House Foundation received the Mayor's Award for Excellence in Stewardship.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SAVE THE BREWMASTER'S CASTLE?

* It is a Washington, D.C. Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, and the last remnant of an era when more than 20 brewers operated in the nation's capital.

* It was home to the largest employer of Germans and the largest private landowner in early 20th century Washington, and to the world's oldest brewer, Christian Heurich, who ran his brewery on the site of the Kennedy Center until his death at 102.

* It was the first fireproof residence and smart house in the nation's capital.

* It is the most intact late-Victorian house museum in the country.

* Its Victorian garden is a beloved oasis for day care centers and downtown office workers, and the only one of its kind in the Dupont Circle area.

* It is a popular Washington treasure...over 8,400 people visited The Brewmaster's Castle last year, an increase of 134% over the previous year...and already over 1,200 in the first 1-1/2 months of this year!
