The Lauren, A Condominium - Our Dupont Circle Neighborhood

Former Neighbors Open City Museum of Washington

Friday, May 17, 2003

The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., which until they moved last week were neighbors of the Lauren, opened its new City Museum of Washington Friday in the old Carnegie Library at Mount Vernon Square, at 9th Street and New York Avenue NW (Metro: Mount Vernon Square/Convention Center, Gallery Place/ Chinatown). The program, which includes exhibition, multimedia show and a research library, focus on the history of the nation's capital.

The new museum got a good review in the Washington Post which called it "An Elegant House of History." Critic Benjamin Forgey, however, had nothing good to say about the 23-minute introductory film, which he called cutesy, smart-alecky" and a "sort of nose-thumbing homer-ism."

The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 to 5. Exhibit admission is $3, students and seniors $2 (the multimedia show is additional). Admission is free on Sundays. Special family activities are planned. Call 202-383-1800.
